Description
The Seattle Labor Chorus formed in March 1997 for a performance at the Northwest Folklife Festival with Pete Seeger and several other well-known folksingers. Since then, the chorus has performed in San Francisco at the Western Workers Labor Heritage Festival and in Baltimore for the Great Labor Arts Exchange. Locally the chorus performs for the King County and Washington State Labor Councils, Starbucks United and many other local unions, as well as other kinds of organizations such as the Seattle Public Library and the Country Doctor Clinic. We also have a 'Flying Squad' of members who can be available on short notice to appear and sing at rallies and picket lines.
Directed by Janet Stecher from 1997-2019, and Miriam Anderson from 2019-present, the chorus is a nonprofit organization dedicated to economic and social justice, and the fundamental right of all workers to organize as a means of securing a living wage. Membership is open and there are no auditions. Officers are elected annually by the members. While the chorus primarily serves the labor community, its repertoire reflects the concerns of all who wish to promote a healthier, more equitable society.
Moving out of the pandemic, we are continuing to give labor a voice in streets and concert halls. Our season runs from September to May. Check out our website for the first rehearsal date.
