Lift Every Voice and Sing
Description
Magnolia Chorale, led by Artistic Director Joseph To, presents spring concerts themed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” after the historic black anthem written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson (lyrics) and his brother Rosamond (music). Inspired by this year's 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the program presents a multicultural perspective of the universal longing for hope, peace, and freedom. The Chorale will sing pieces drawn from a multitude of voices, including: Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight by African-American composer Florence Price; “Yôtin” (The Wind) by Cree-Dene composer Sherryl Sewepagaham; “¡Ayúdame!” (Help Me!) by Venezuelan composer Carlos Cordero, and much more. The common theme is to uplift the voices of the unsung and honor the efforts of those who have sacrificed, endured, and kept hope alive in the face of extreme challenges.
