Description
The Olympia Youth Chorus, established in 1995, is a nonprofit 501(c)3 vocal music program for young singers in the South Sound community. OYC members typically reside in the Olympia, Tumwater, and Lacey communities, but also regionally from Tenino, Elma, Shelton, Chehalis, Yelm, Hoodsport, and Hoquiam. Singers come from public and private schools, as well as home-schooled populations. Although no previous formal musical training is required, many of our auditioned choral members perform in their school orchestras, bands, or choirs. In addition to vocal solos, members have the opportunity to perform instrumental solos with the Chorus. The youth benefit from an enriching experience of working and performing with other talented young singers and our skilled professional staff. School-aged singers between the ages of 5-18 may participate. The Chorus is made up of singers from over forty schools in our area who are enthusiastic about singing, building friendships, performing, and pursuing musical excellence.
The Chorus sings unison, two, three, and four-part music written for treble voices. We choose from a wide range of traditional and contemporary music that is best suited for the musical and vocal development of the choirs.
The Chorus performs in several different venues throughout the year, including the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, The Governor’s Mansion, Argosy Cruises, Providence St. Peter Foundation’s Christmas in the Forest, and elementary and middle schools in the region. The Olympia Youth chorus has also performed in the following choral events and tours:
