Winter Series ConcertsPhoenix, by Peter Hall
The image of the Phoenix rising out of the ashes comes originally from Egyptian mythology but was taken over by the early Christians as a symbol of the resurrection of Christ from the dead. From its opening bars, this work, with its unique combination of instruments and voices, succeeds in transporting both performers and listeners. Indeed, this transcendence to a "resurrection experience," the essence of this piece, is captured so vividly through the musical medium as the drama of the text unfolds.
