Description

Beginning in the 10th century, the Christian church began to recognize certain holy persons as saints, and by the end of the middle ages, the list of the canonized was extensive. Many were felt to have a special relationship to a certain believers, such as young clerics (St. Nicholas) or bakers (St. Elizabeth), and were called upon to intercede with God on their behalf.
