Description

In 1614, Sad sack noble Sir William Leighton published The Teares and Lamentatacions of a Sorrowfull Soule, featuring 55 of his poems set by 21 different well-known composers of the day, including William Byrd, John Wilbye, John Ward, Thomas Weelkes, Orlando Gibbons, and Francis Pilkington. This program showcases a number of these works, performed alongside madrigals by the same composers—both famous and obscure—that focus on faraway lands and legendary figures from mythology.
